Neurodevelopmental Disorders

-    Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
-    Autistic spectrum disorders (e.g. Asperger’s syndrome)

Prof Craig has specific clinical expertise in the assessment and treatment of adults with neurodevelopmental disorders including high functioning autism spectrum disorders (e.g. Asperger’s syndrome) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). He is Clinical Lead of the National Autism Unit (NAU), Royal Bethlem Hospital and a specialist Consultant, at the National Adult ADHD Clinic, Maudsley Hospital .

In 2021 Prof Craig was appointed as Professor of Translational Reproductive and Neurodevelopmental Sciences at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, Kings College London (IoPPN, KCL), where he is a lead investigator in cutting edge research projects in neurodevelopmental disorders . He also developed and has led the MSc in Clinical Neurodevelopmental Sciences at the IoPPN, KCL.

Prof Craig accepts private referrals for the assessment and treatment of adults with neurodevelopmental disorders. He sees patients in his rooms in Pinero House, Harley Street, and at the Nightingale Hospital where he is clinical lead of the Nightingale ADHD service, which he set up in 2007.

ADHD assessments: Prof Craig uses a well-researched protocol that includes the Brown and Berkley scales and the Conners’ Adult ADHD Diagnostic Interview for DSM-IV™ (CAADID™). When available old school reports are analysed and psychometric tests are sometimes administered if required.  His approach to the treatment of adult ADHD includes a multi-professional approach. This may include medication, and/or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and/or Psycho-Education and/or biofeedback.

ASD assessments: The following are included in a gold standard assessment: a) A clinical assessment - based on International Classification of Diseases 10th Edition (ICD-10) criteria; b) The Autism Diagnostic Interview (ADI-R) – a semi-standardised interview of parents, which focuses primarily on the key diagnostic characteristics of ASD and c) The Autism Observation Schedule (ADOS-G, Module 4) - a semi-structured interview/observational assessment that focuses on communication, social interaction and imagination. Treatment, if needed, is provided via a holistic, multi-professional approach. This may include one-to-one CBT, social skills training, and/or group therapy. A review of medication will also be considered for individuals with associated mental health difficulties.
